As I've been thinking about what to post on this blog and my new path, I thought I should post some goals so that I can track my progress and make sure I don't stray too far from becoming and living as the person that I want to be. However, instead of listing separate goals to attain, I thought a better way would be to list the things that are the most important to me and stick with only one goal.
My goal is this: Live in a way that allows me to focus on those things that are the most important to me.
To attain this goal I've chosen minimalism.
My Favorite Things
- Spending time with family
- Spending time with friends
- Listening to music
- Dancing
- Reading
- Learning
- Experiencing nature
Very interesting; I must have done something right in your upbringing.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been interested in Native American culture and spiritual beliefs for a long time now, and it seem to fit in very well with your philosophy. I’ve done a lot of reading on the subject and it makes a lot of sense to me as a philosophy for living. Although I can’t say that I have exercised the necessary discipline to adequately abide by it. Maybe you can inspire me to do better. I’m sure you have seen these in your readings, but here are the Native American Ten Commandments:
• The Earth is our Mother, care for her.
• Honor all your relations.
• Open your heart and soul to the Great Spirit.
• All life is sacred; treat all things with respect.
• Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more.
• Do what needs to be done for the good of all.
• Give constant thanks to the Great Spirit for each new day.
• Speak the truth; but only of the good in others.
• Follow the rhythms of nature; rise and retire with the sun.
• Enjoy life's journey, but leave no tracks.
Now that you will be closer, I can help you experience nature. I’m already planning an overnight backpacking trip in the Uwharies this fall. The trail head is less than an hour and a half from the house. It’s only about a 20 mile trip, which should be a leisurely 2 day walk in that terrain. Later on maybe we can take some longer, more challenging hikes on the A.T.
By the way, I am also doing something that I have wanted for a long time. I found a guitar teacher and I’m going to start lessons. I’ve always wanted to learn to play, but have always let other things get in the way. The time has come to finally come to move those things out of the way and get on with what I want.

By the way, here is the link to a nice little video on the Native American Ten Commandments. I love the music.

Thanks for the comments! I'll have to raid your bookshelf for some of your Native American philosophy books. Whatever the belief system, different religions pretty much have similar basic morals they try to emulate for their followers. I just wish more religions would recognize that fact instead of highlighting all of the differences! I can't wait to hit the Uwharies during my favorite season!
